The role of the project manager

Are you considering pursuing project management as a career path, or perhaps you are a newly appointed project manager, then you'll find some useful pointers on this page.

So, what is the role of the project manager?. It is the project manager's job to direct, supervise and control the project from beginning to end. Project managers do not usually carry out project work themselves (at least not in major or complex projects) - instead their role is planning, organising and leading the project.

The project manager gains the scope of the project from the sponsor or client, and must then formulate a project plan that defines the proposed the cost, time and resources required to meet the quality standards as defined within the project scope. All of these elements of the project are inter-dependent - and if one dimension is changed it will have an impact upon the other project dimensions.

Here are some of the responsibilities of the project manager:
  • The project manager must be clear about the goals and outcomes of theproject. These outcomes are then reduced  to a set of manageable tasks - which will in turn determine the time, resources and budget which will be needed to complete the project
  • The project manager will often need to select a project team who will bring the necessary technical skills to the project
  • The project manager is regularly required to provide project progress resports to key stakeholders
  • The project manager needs to monitor risks to the project and mitigate them.
  • No project ever goes exactly as planned, so project managers must learn to adapt to and manage change
